I've found this month I have started to get frustrated with how progress is so slow for Caitlin. I think alot of sb mummies feel this way. Up until a few months ago Caitlin was meeting all her milestones at the average age, she rolled over at around 5months and was sitting at 7months. She was scooting around the wooden floor backwards by 10months and I thought crawling would inevitably happen pretty soon after that. Caitin is nearly 14months now and hasn't progressed to crawling yet. She was doing well standing up while holding onto her walker for a up to a minute at a time but then I was told by her physio to not let her do that until she gets her afo's because it might cause her feet to turn inwards. I do get caught up in it, I see other babies her age and they are either crawling around, or walking, or getting around by shuffling around on their bum. Caitlin can't do any of that yet. She still needs pillows behind her when she sits because she can just lose her balance and fall. My heart breaks for her when I see her watching other children move around. She points to what they're doing because she wants to do it and I would hold her up so she can stand like them, but after a minute her knees buckle and she has to sit down again. Her little legs just aren't strong enough. I feel so bad as she goes back to sitting and looks so confused as she can't do what all the other kids her age are doing. She needs her afo's but we won't get them for at least another 2/3months.
So it was lovely to read my friend Misty's blog, it was as if she was reading my mind! She said that in ten years time children with sb won't care when they crawled or walked. They won't remember that is took so long. She is right! Thanks Misty for reminding me that :-)
While Caitlin has problems with getting around, she sure makes up for it in other ways. She is super smart. I know I'm a bit biased as her mum but she is lol. Everybody we meet says she is the most pleasant child. She smiles and says hiya to every face she sees. It's her favourite word. Her second favourite word would probably be Jack, (she says dack), that's the dogs name. She thinks all dogs are called Jack and any dog she sees she waves to them, calls them Jack and tries to pet them. She has been saying mama and dada for months and points to everything asking "what's dat" and "whos dat". If I ask her who somebody is and she doesn't know, she shrugs her shoulders. If she want's food she'll ask for some "num nums." The other day my brother Aaron called her a bold girl and ever since if she does something bold like throw her plate of food on the floor she'll smile and call herself a "bold gur".
This month we started swimming classes. Caitlin's physiotherapist had reccommended swimming because it helps their muscles, helps circulation and as Caitlin loves swimming anyway I thought it was a win - win situation and unsurprisingly Caitlin loves it! She gets to splash around as much as she wants (which is alot) and the instructor says she is doing very well. She is really sociable and loves to play with the other babies.
She also went to her first trip to the aquarium earlier in the week and she was fascinated by the fishes and the seals, and naturally she nearly caused her mum to have a panic attack when she dunked her hand in a tank with sharks in it!
She's going through a phase where when you say smile for the camera she squeezes her eyes shut while she smiles. It's very cute.
Our favourite part was meeting the seals who were waving to us and Caitlin was waving back and saying hiya.

This week Caitlin has two eye appointments. Her last one went fine, but she needs yearly check up's as hydrocephalus can cause problems with her eye sight. I'm pretty optimistic about them, but there's always that worry that there's something that I haven't spotted. I will let you know how it all goes!
